Twitter to resume verification of user accounts

After more than three years, the social media giant Twitter is resuming verification of user accounts with the coveted blue badge.

Twitter’s verification system had been suspended in 2017 after a public uproar over the process that saw “questionable characters” verified, while notable figures were given a berth.

“Today’s application rollout marks the next milestone in our plans to give more transparency, credibility and clarity to verification on Twitter,” read a company blog post released on Thursday.

Twitter says that to apply for verification, an account must be notable, active and authentic.

The new process creates a more public system for people to get verified on Twitter, which is an important form of social currency for pop culture stars, journalists, and other public figures. Currently, more than 360,000 people are verified on Twitter.

Twitter will ask you to fill out an application form and attach supporting materials and links to verify your identity.

If your account checks all boxes, you can proceed to make your application.

Once done, submit the request. You will then receive a notification email from the network.

Who qualifies and how can I sign up?

To be eligible to get verified, you have to belong to one of the following six categories:

-Government

-Companies, brands, and organizations

-News organizations and journalists

-Entertainment

-Sports and gaming

-Activists, organizers, and other influential individuals

You’ll also need to have a profile name and image, and give Twitter either a confirmed email address or phone number to prove you are who you say you are. You also have to be found to be in compliance with Twitter’s rules, which include restrictions on hate speech and threatening content.
