Waiguru ditches Jubilee Party for UDA

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has joined the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) which is led by Deputy President William Ruto.

The Governor, who is seeking to defend her 2022 gubernatorial seat, was welcomed to the party on Tuesday morning following a meeting with DP Ruto at his official residence in Karen in the company of about 23 Kirinyaga Members of County Assembly.

Governor Waiguru’s political allegiance has in the recent past been in a sort of limbo after she stated that defending her seat on a Jubilee ticket if elections were held today, would be difficult.

She also claimed that the Mt Kenya region is dissatisfied with how Jubilee Party has been run over the last five years.

“If I ran today on a Jubilee ticket and someone else ran on a different party, even if people felt I had performed , it would be hard to convince them to vote for me,”  Waiguru stated last month.

A task is now ahead of her as she changes the tact and optics of facing Kirinyanga on a new face in the gubernatorial race or future political career.

She is among senior Jubilee Party officials to have decamped to UDA, after DP Ruto also made it clear that his former party was a moribund.

According to Ruto, Jubilee has been curtailed by the 2018 handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party boss Raila Odinga.

This even as the political drum beats are taking shape in readiness for next year’s general election.
