KEMRI declares Director General post vacant

Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) has commenced the process of recruiting a substantive Director General after the position fell vacant.

In an advert in the local dailies, KEMRI invited interested and qualified individuals to submit their applications by October 5, 2021.

“The Director-General shall hold office for a term of three years but shall be eligible for re-appointment for one further term of three years,” read the advert.

In early March 2021, the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Health appointed Prof. Samuel Kariuki, Director, Research and Development at KEMRI as the Acting Director General of KEMRI, replacing Prof. Yeri Israel Kombe who served at helm of the institute in same capacity for the last three years.

It was under Pro. Kariuki’s helm that President Uhuru Kenyatta unveiled the first locally manufactured malaria rapid diagnostic kit at the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme in Kilifi County.

The Corporation said the applicant must be a degree holder in a health related field, finance or audit, economics and law with an experience of not less than 10 years.

KEMRI also called on persons with disabilities, the marginalized and minorities to apply for the vacant positions.

The Director General reports to the Board of Directors, who still holds office for a term of three years but is eligible for re-appointment for another term.

The applicants are required to provide Certificate of good conduct, Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) compliance certificate, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Tax compliance certificate, Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) clearance certificate, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Clearance certificate.
