India reports record high of 6,148 COVID-19 deaths in 24 hours

India has reported a single-day world record of over 6,000 COVID-19 deaths in 24 hours, taking the country’s cumulative fatalities to nearly 360,000

According to the Federal Health Ministry, 6,148 new COVID-19 related deaths were recorded as daily reported cases remained below 100,000 for the third consecutive day.

The fatalities jumped after one of India’s states, Bihar, was ordered by the court to revise its total virus related death toll on Wednesday from about 5,400 to more than 9,400.

India’s caseload stands at 29.1 million with over a million active cases across the country.

Cumulatively, India has administered more than 24.2 million COVID-19 vaccine doses so far under the nationwide vaccination drive.

This as United States President Joe Biden announced that India would receive 80 million doses out of the 500 million COVID-19 jabs that the U.S will donate to middle and low-income countries around the world.

India has been battered by a devastating second wave of the pandemic that kicked off in February, overrunning the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

While health officials said India hit its virus peak in May, government officials have sounded the alarm over a potential third wave that could hit the country later this year.
