DCI boss George Kinoti sentenced to 4-Months in Kamiti Prison

The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) George Kinoti has been sentenced to four months in prison.

A High Court ruled Thursday, directing Kinoti to serve his jail term at Kamiti Maximum Prison.

Kinoti has been jailed for contempt of court after he failed to return firearms which were confiscated from Jimi Wanjigi.

In his ruling, Judge Antony Mrima noted that DCI Kinoti has seven days to present himself to prison authorities.

The court further noted if the DCI boss fails to adhere to the ruling, a warrant of arrest will be issued against him.

“In the event Mr George Kinoti fails to avail himself as order above, a warrant of arrest will be issued against him. The warrant of arrest shall be forthwith executed by the Inspector General of Police.

“In the further event that the Inspector General of Police fails to execute the warrant of arrest, the same shall remain valid and remain executed at any time including when George Kinoti leaves the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions,” reads the ruling.

In July 2017, the National Police Service and the DCI were ordered to return seven guns they confiscated from Wanjigi in October 2017.

High Court judge Chacha Mwita said the security officers violated Wanjigi’s rights by raiding his Muthaiga home without a warrant even after a court order was issued barring the search and seizure of the firearms.

The High Court said the search was illegal as no warrant had been issued.

“Once a firearm certificate has been issued the police have no mandate to confiscate the holder’s firearm without lawful cause,” he said.
