South African health DG suspended over corruption scandal

The Director-General (DG) in the Health Department Sandile Buthelezi has been placed on precautionary suspension over his role in the 150 million rand (Ksh.1 billion) Digital Vibes corruption scandal.

Health Department spokesperson Popo Maja said he would be on suspension until he appeared before a disciplinary hearing. Nicholas Crisp, Deputy Director-General in charge of the National Health Insurance would be the acting DG until the matter was resolved.

The suspension came after a Special Investigative Unit (SIU) report implicated Buthelezi in the corruption scandal which led to the resignation of the former Health Minister Zweli Mkhize last month.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the report was taken to court in a bid to reclaim the 150 million rand.

Criminal charges against those implicated in the investigation have been opened.
