Senators want treasury to do away with IFMIS

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior wants the Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS), scrapped citing challenges.

According to the legislator, with the system, it is impossible to account for monies disbursed to counties and that it lacks real time data on the devolved units, beating the reason for its existence.

He was speaking during a virtual meeting with the Senate Committee on Finance and Budget and the Controller of Budget, Council of Governors, Auditor General and the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor to deliberate on the efficacy of the system.

During the session, legislators also raised concerns over the lack of comprehensive integration with other modules as a deliberate decision to derail any accountability processes.

This even as the committee faulted the decision to have the system domiciled at the National Treasury who is a user of the platform like the rest of the institutions saying this allows the Treasury undue access.

The system was first implemented in  2013 with the view to seal loopholes in public finance management exposed but is yet to be officially launched.
