Roam, Kenya’s electric mobility company, has inked a deal with digital credit provider 4G Capital to provide boda boda riders an affordable financing option for electric motorcycles.
The partnership boosts access to clean and sustainable transportation in Kenya and the financial well-being of riders across the country.
Boda boda operators will own a Roam Air electric motorcycle with a single battery for daily payments of Ksh.460.
This will allow them to save up to Ksh. 500 in daily operational costs compared to conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles.
The financing model is part of 4G Capital’s Jiinue Growth Program (2022–2027), supported by the Mastercard Foundation.
The deal goes further to consider the Kenyan youth – men and women alike, in what it appears as taming the high rate of unemployment in Kenya.
“We are partnering with Roam to support their mission of accelerating the adoption of clean, sustainable transportation solutions,” said Valentine Nasila, Head of Partnerships at 4G Capital.
Riders will have the opportunity to maximize their earnings while embracing environmentally friendly transport solutions – in a sector currently employing about 2 million people who contribute over Ksh.200 billion to the GDP – 3.4% of the country’s total output.
An initial deposit has been set at Ksh.25,000 for the Roam Air electric motorcycle with a single battery which offers an 80 km range.
A rider would then make daily payment of Ksh.460 for 24 months to fully own their motorcycle and battery.
Those who require an extra battery can add Ksh.5,000 to their deposit and pay an additional Ksh.207 per day for the same period.
Mobile money integration has been incorporated into the payment system for efficient payment process.
“Roam is committed to creating a future where mobility is affordable, sustainable, and inclusive. Our partnership with 4G Capital reflects our shared vision of empowering boda boda riders with solutions that drive economic growth and environmental stewardship,” stated Stephen Kahuthia, Roam Sales Field Manager.
Beyond affordability, the Roam Air electric motorcycle offers flexibility, as riders can charge their bikes anywhere using a standard power outlet.
The charging cost has been primed at Ksh.80 for an 80 km range.
