Media association sets date for presidential debate

Kenya Presidential Debates 2022 will take place in July in conjunction with the Media Council of Kenya and the Kenya Editors Guild in consultation with political parties as the country prepares August 9, 2022, General Elections.

This is according to Media Owners Association in the country.

“It is scheduled to take place in July in consultation with political parties ahead of August 9, 2022. Also, a team of senior editors from across media houses has been put in place to secure the interest of Kenyans and to deliver fairness to all concerned,” they said in a joint statement.

Clifford Machoka has been appointed as the of Head of the Presidential Debates Secretariat who is currently the Head of External Affairs and Marketing, Nation Media Groups.

Machoka, aided by Leo Mutisya, the Media Council of Kenya’s Head of Research and Media Monitoring and Rosalia Omungo, the Kenya Editors’ Guild’s Chief Executive Officer will lead a multi-institutional team to engage political party partners and stakeholders in the electoral process and organise the 2022  Presidential and Deputy Presidential Debates.

“A team of senior editors from across the media houses has been established to provide stewardship of the content aspects given how critical the debates are to ensure the public interest obligations are served,” reads the statement.

David Omwonyo, CEO of Media Council, however, encouraged all presidential candidates and their deputies to make a point of attending the debates.

“The committee led by Clifford will issue guidelines on the venue, mode of submitting the questions, which model will be used to decide which candidates will be invited to participate in the debate,” said Omwonyo.

The committee assured the public and stakeholders that they will provide Kenyans with quality issue-based presidential and deputy presidential debates that will enable their decision making in the elections.
