President Uhuru Kenyatta has challenged Chief Justice Maatha Koome to honour her oath of office as she takes up her new role as Kenya’s top judge.
Kenyatta who witnessed the swearing-in of Kenya’s first female Chief Justice at State House Nairobi, pledged his support for the Judiciary.
“It’s a singular honour to be the first president to swear in the first female Chief Justice of Kenya. Mine is only to wish you God’s blessings as you embark on your duties. We are going to partner with you and work with you,” said President Kenyatta.
Koome makes history as Kenya’s first woman CJ, becoming the third Chief Justice since the promulgation of the Constitution on August 27, 2010.

President Kenyatta reminding Justice William Ouko of his longstanding service within the Judiciary. Ouko, until his appointment as Supreme Court Judge, was the President of the Court of Appeal.
“Justice Ouko, both of you have grown in the Judiciary system, there’s nothing I can teach you. All I ask from you is for justice to be done and we won’t have a problem with you,” said President Kenyatta.
Justice Koome succeeds David Maraga who retired in on January 12, 2021.
During Maraga’s tenure, the Executive arm of government and the Judiciary had a frosty relationship, especially after the Supreme Court annulled President Kenyatta’s election victory in 2017.
