The Open Institute of Technology (OPIT), a global online university, has unveiled OPIT AI Copilot—a cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistant set to redefine the future of digital learning.
The AI Copilot is a leap in accessible and inclusive education, particularly for students across Africa and has been designed to offer real-time, personalized academic support.
OPIT is among the first European institutions to deeply integrate AI into its virtual campus with over 350 students from 80+ countries, Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana,
The AI Copilot delivers an adaptive learning experience tailored to each student’s unique academic journey.
Trained on more than 3,500 hours of OPIT course content, spanning 131 courses and 320 assessments, the AI assistant can provide contextual guidance linked to specific lessons, track student progress and tailor support accordingly and offer mentorship and learning help around the clock.
“This is a game-changer for working professionals and students across Africa who are juggling education, careers, and family life,” said Riccardo Ocleppo, Founder and Director of OPIT. “Our AI Copilot breaks down barriers of time, distance, and academic complexity by providing flexible 24/7 access to support.”
Beyond tutoring, the AI Copilot also serves educators. It automates grading, creates learning materials, and generates feedback rubrics—cutting assessment time by up to 30%, freeing up faculty to focus on deeper student engagement and curriculum development.

To uphold academic integrity, the Copilot enters a restricted “anti-cheating mode” during exams—disabling direct answers while acting as a smart reference tool that encourages critical thinking and self-guided learning.
The AI Copilot was launched at Microsoft’s AI Agents and the Future of Higher Education event in Milan, drawing participation from global institutions such as IE University and the Royal College of Art.
“AI is the new context for learning—but it also comes with ethical and cultural responsibilities,” said Professor Francesco Profumo, Rector of OPIT and former Italian Minister of Education. “We must build responsible bridges between human and artificial intelligence.”
In line with Africa’s growing mobile-first culture, OPIT plans to release a mobile app this autumn. The app will let students access downloadable materials such as concept maps and course summaries—even in areas with limited internet access.
