US Trade Agency and Craftskills Kenya to develop wind power plant in Kajiado

Kenya Craftskills Energy Limited has been awarded a grant to develop a 50 megawatt wind power plant with an integrated battery storage capacity. The plant will be set up in Kajiado county.

The grant was awarded by the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).

Actics, a US investment firm that invests in growth markets across Africa, Asia and Latin America will work hand in hand with Craftskill while Delphos International, another US firm, will execute the study.

USTDA Director, Thomas R Hardy, complimented Craftskills on its quality partners and believes that the US companies will be very competitive in the supply of the Kajiado project major components. The US embassy is also in support of the project.

The project is in support of Power Africa and Electrify Africa Act that aims at increasing capacity and supporting private sector involvement in Africa’s Energy sector.

In December 2018, Power Africa partner and majority shareholder, Actis, had laid in plans with Kenyan developer and minority shareholder Craftskills, which brought the Kipeto project, the country’s second-largest wind farm, to financial close.

The Kipeto power project will add enormous of renewable energy to Kenya’s national grid, and will provide 100% of its citizens with access to electricity by 2022 under the recently released Kenya National Electrification Strategy (KNES) and Vision 2030.
