The Union of Kenya Civil Servants Homa Bay County branch has threatened to sue the county government for delays in paying their salaries.
Union Chairman Tom Mboya Aketch said the county government has failed to pay salaries for two consecutive months while other employees are yet to receive payments for up to three months.
“The employees are having a difficult time as it is and some have not been able to send their children back to school after the half-term because of finances,” said Aketch.
Delayed payments have persisted despite the county Chief Financial Officer Noah Otieno promising to pay all the salaries by the 20th day of every month.
“It is the right of the county employees to be rewarded for their labour to enable employees to cater for rent, food, water, electricity, and school fees.”

He accused the County of failing to promptly remit statutory monthly deductions including the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) denying the employees access to quality healthcare services.
Aketch urged other unions in the county to encourage their members to join forces in downing their tools until such a time that all their grievances would be addressed.
“We are encouraging the relevant authorities to come out and explain to the unions the reasons behind the salary delays, otherwise we have an alternative way of sorting out this matter. We will sue the county government soon” said Aketch.
