Uganda Begins Direct Importation of Fuel Via Port of Mombasa

The unloading of the consignment is currently underway at the state-of-the-art 40-billion shillings Kipevu Oil Terminal 2.

The inaugural shipment of imported petroleum products has now broken the longstanding dominance of Kenyan Oil Marketing Companies in supplying fuel to Uganda.

Uganda will utilize the facilities of the Port of Mombasa alongside the infrastructure of the Kenya Pipeline Company for the transfer of fuel, following an agreement which was signed between Nairobi and Kampala in May this year.

With a cargo of over 60,000 metric tons of petrol earmarked for Uganda, the first vessel, Navig8 Matines, made its arrival at the port of Mombasa on Wednesday afternoon.

The unloading of the consignment is currently underway at the state-of-the-art 40-billion shillings Kipevu Oil Terminal 2.

The terminal boasts a substantial capacity of 24 million metric tonnes.

The facility is designed to eradicate demurrage costs and is distinguished by its offshore island terminal equipped with four berths, each spanning 770 meters.

Petroleum Supply Amendment Act of 2003

It is capable of accommodating multiple vessels simultaneously.

Uganda accorded exclusive authority to the Uganda National Oil Company for the direct procurement of petroleum products by the ratification of the Petroleum Supply Amendment Act of 2003.

Museveni will henceforth, independently import diesel, petrol, aviation fuel, crude oil, and even liquefied petroleum gas via the Mombasa port.

Logistics are anticipated as the products are slated to be transported through the infrastructure of the Kenya Pipeline to Kisumu or Eldoret, facilitating onward delivery to Uganda.
