Three terror convicts who escaped from Kamiti prison arrested

The three terror convicts Musharaf Abdalla alias Alex Shikanda (34), Joseph Juma Odhiambo (30) and Mohammed Ali Abikar (35) who escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison have been arrested in Kitui County.

They are currently being driven back to Nairobi under highly tightened security detail.

According to locals in Kitui County, the three were spotted at Malalani shopping centre and bought a lot of water.

They looked exhausted and one of them had wounds. Suspicion was raised among the public when they asked for directions to Boni Forest in Lamu County.

“The three were arrested in Mwingi East as they approached Ukasi. The suspects were arrested after detectives received a tip-off from locals and moved swiftly to arrest the trio,” said the DCI.

The suspects used blankets, strings and broomsticks to create makeshift ropes that they used to scale two high walls around the correctional facility to escape from the highly guarded prison.

The daring escape saw several Kamiti prison officers arrested for allegedly aiding the criminals to flee. The suspects are on their way being driven back to Nairobi.

Their escape has seen Kenya Prisons General Commissioner Wycliffe Ogalo relieved of his duties.

In a statement Thursday, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed  Brigadier (Rtd) John Kibaso Wariba to replace Ogalo.

“The briefing noted the compelling public interest in the matter and need to entrench accountability on the ranks of the leadership of all security organs; in honour of the many Kenyans who have lost their lives and the enormous sacrifices made by all Kenyans and particularly the security organs to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat terror networks,” reads a letter by State House Spokesperson Kannze Dena Mararo.

Several Kamiti prison officers have also been arrested for allegedly aiding the criminals to flee.
