The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been allocated Ksh.2.5 billion for recruitment of teachers.
This was revealed by National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani while reading the budget proposals for 2022-2023, which allocated Ksh.544.4 billion to the Education Sector.
TSC was given Ksh.294.7 billion in total, an increase from Ksh.281.7 billion last year.
Ksh.64.4 billion has been set aside for Free Day Secondary Education, which will also cover students’ National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) coverage.
A further Ksh.5 billion has been set aside to cover examination fee waivers for candidates in Grade 6, Class 8, and Form 4
Some Ksh.1.2 billion has been allocated to cater for the training of teachers on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) while the Digital Literacy Programme received Ksh.310 million and ICT integration in secondary schools
The School Feeding Programme has been allocated Ksh.1.96 billion.
Other education expenditure allocations include Ksh.91.2 billion for University Education and Ksh.1.8 billion for the construction and equipping of Technical Vocational Education Training (TVETs)
Ksh.2.8 billion was allocated to support the development of school infrastructure in both Primary and Secondary schools as students progress to Junior Secondary.
CS Yatani noted that heavy investment in education has resulted in an increase in the number of Primary Schools from 26,549 to 32,437 while Secondary Schools have grown from 7,174 to 10,413 between 2012 and 2020.
In the 2022/23 budget, a further Ksh.527 million has been set aside for Technical Vocational Education Training and entrepreneurship while Ksh.323 million has been allocated for the National Research Fund.
