Tanzania President Suluhu forms COVID-19 committee, urges public to take precautions

President Samia Suluhu has already formed a coronavirus committee of health experts, one year after the late Magufuli declared the country coronavirus free.

President Suluhu said the health experts on COVID-19 will advise her on the situation of the virus in the country for necessary steps to be taken, according to the report by Tanzania’s local daily, The Citizen.

“As I promised during the swearing in of the Permanent Secretaries and their deputies, I have already formed a committee. I’m expecting to meet its members and representatives of the ministry of Health and those from the ministry of Finance and Planning in the near future in order to establish the way forward,” Said President Suluhu.

Religious leaders in the country have been called upon to educate worshipers on the disease as advised by health experts including handwashing with soap and running water, using sanitizers, maintaining social distancing and use of face masks.

She made the announcement while in Dodoma during a national conference organized by religious leaders to remember former President Magufuli and pray for the new leaders including herself and her Zanzibar counterpart, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi.

On April 6, President Suluhu declared her intent to form a committee of experts to professionally evaluate the COVID-19 pandemic so as to advise the government on the way forward.

“We cannot isolate ourselves as if we are an Island but also we cannot accept everything brought to us, we cannot continue just reading about COVID-19 Worldwide, yet Tanzania is all blank, it is incomprehensible,” she said.

According to World Health Organisation’s (WHO) latest data report has only infected 509 Tanzania Citizens. The figures were last recorded in April 2020.

Ever since the late Magufuli endorsed inhaling steam to prevent coronavirus, many Tanzanians have flocked to shops selling steam machines, even though health experts say there is no evidence the method has any impact on COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.
