Tabitha Karanja released on a Sh.10M cash bail

Keroche breweries industry boss Tabitha Karanja and her husband Joseph Karanja were on Friday morning released on a Ksh10 million cash bail.

The two were arrested on Thursday by the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers in Naivasha, remained guests to the states until Friday morning when they appeared in court before Chief magistrate Francis Andayi.

They, however, denied the Ksh14.4 billion tax evasion charges following an investigation which was done by Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), resulting to issuance of warranty of arrest by Director of Criminal Investigations (DPP) Noordin Haji.

The two directors were represented by Senior Counsil James Orengo who told the courts that Mrs. Karanja’s husband was sick and any delays in his treatment posed health risks.

“He has recently undergone a surgery…police were able to release him before 10 last night (Thursday). Despite his medical condition and being granted a free bond he has been able to appear in court,” Senior Counsel Orengo

Chief Magistrate Andayi directed that Mr Karanja to be released on Sh2 million cash bail which would be payable within seven days.

The judge also noted that the two are investors within the country therefore they pose no risk of fleeing the country given their business interests.

Their case will be mentioned on September 2 and the pre-trial hearing on September 24.
