South Africa bans sale of alcohol over Easter period

South Africa has tightened measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 as part of its level one lockdown restrictions.

Addressing the nation on Tuesday on developments in the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a ban on the sale of alcohol for off-site consumption ahead of the Easter weekend running from Friday to Monday.

However, on-site sales of alcohol at restaurants and bars will be allowed until 11 p.m in the evening.

Religious gatherings will be limited to 250 people indoors and 500 outdoors while the current curfew from midnight to 4 a.m remaining unchanged.

According to Worldometer, South Africa has reported over 1.5 million cases of COVID-19, with at least 52,700 fatalities and over 1.47 million recoveries.
