Seven injured after building collapses in Kisumu

At least seven people are nursing injuries after a two-storey building collapsed while under construction in Mamboleo, Kisumu.

The injured have been rushed to the hospital as rescue operators and the police comb the scene to establish the course.

The incident comes as surveyors have raised an alarm over substandard houses being constructed in the city.

“We were having lunch on site… we just heard a cracking sound and then the building collapsed,” said Joseph Okello, a worker who survived.

They allayed fears that unknown numbers of people are feared trapped under the debris of collapsed building including a woman who serves food to the site workers.

It is said the unfortunate incident occurred by lunch hour. A baby and a mother were heard crying inside the building as rescue workers struggled to cut through the debris to rescue them.

Other survivors who narrowly escaped death were still working on one side of the building, which had developed large cracks barely a few meters from where the building collapsed.

The large cracks on the building are suspected to be the course of collapse.

Police are yet to release a statement on the casualties.
