Leaders from the pastoralist community have urged the National Assembly to allocate more money to the Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) to help them in livestock off-take program.
The leaders from Laikipia, Samburu, Baringo and Isiolo counties noted that the drought situation in the Amaya counties that has been brought about by inconsistent rains for the better part of the year has seen mass movement of livestock which has resulted in an escalation of conflict in the region.
The leaders led by Governors Nderitu Muriithi (Laikipia) Stanley Kiptis (Baringo), Isiolo Deputy Governor Abdi Issa and his counterpart from Samburu Julius Leseeto said they had agreed to set aside funds during the making of the supplementary budget to assist in the livestock offtake program.
This, they said, will also help in purchase of supplements and a joint coordination in disease control and vaccination of the livestock.
The leaders spoke in Rumuruti town in Laikipia County during a peace meeting under the Amaya triangle and resolved to speak to their respective herders to have them get permits for grazing and not forcefully invade private farms and ranches.
Muriithi called on leaders from the region to be in the forefront in preaching peace noting that the Amaya triangle was doing much in addressing the same.
Members of County Assembly led by Kipruto Kimossop (Muchongoi) and George Karuiru (Ol moran) present during the meeting called for disarmament noting that presence of illegal firearms had escalated conflict in the region.
