The Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions’ (ODPP) says its social media account has been hacked.
In an update on Twitter Tuesday, ODPP said its Facebook account experienced malicious activities and are working to resolve the matter, which they termed as temporary.
“We wish to inform the members of the public that our Facebook page has been temporarily hacked and we are working towards resolving the issue,” said ODPP.
This is not the first time a government’s social media or state officials’ account has been hacked.
In May 2019, the then National Assembly’s Majority Leader Aden Duale’s Facebook account experienced malicious activities when funny posts started popping up.
In March 2017, a Kenyan national, Alex Mutungi Mutuku, 28 then, was charged in court for making away with Kenya Revenue AAuthority’s (KRA) Ksh.4.3 billion through hacking.
And about seven years back, the Twitter account of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) was infiltrated by hacking group anonymous.
The hackers gained access to Kenya’s military account as well as that of KDF spokesperson Major Emmanuel Chirchir and used it to send abusive information that raised eyebrows on Sunday night and Monday morning.
The group also defaced the website of the National Environment Trust Fund.
This activity involves hackers gaining access to high-tech equipment and software which enabled them to steal from corporations.
“It is a case of remote control hacking where the suspects operate smoothly with their machines and the next minute you realise you have no money in your account,” said state prosecutor Edwin Okello as was once quoted by the Standard Newspaper.
