Kenya is once again witnessing a surge in coronavirus infection with Nairobi County leading in record numbers.
Latest data from the Ministry of Health indicate Kenya has recorded 1,006 COVID-19 cases from of a sample size of 5,584 that was tasted in the last 24 hours, shooting the country’s positivity rate of 18.0 percent.
The total confirmed positive cases are now 199,941 while the cumulative tests so far conducted are 2,109,581.
13 patients are reported to have succumbed to the disease, all of them being late deaths pushing the cumulative fatalities to 3,895.
However, 261 more patients have recovered from the disease with 228 from various health facilities countrywide while 33 are from the Home Based care, pushing total recoveries to 187,824.

In terms of case distribution, Nairobi County with 391 cases is currently leading in number of infections followed at a distance by Kiambu 121, Kilifi at 87 then Kajiado at 56.
Other cases are distributed are as follow; Mombasa 46, Nakuru 42, Uasin Gishu 37, Busia 26, Murang’a 24, Machakos 18, Kericho 14, Nyandarua 13, Taita Taveta 11, Kirinyaga 10, Migori 10, Bungoma 8, Nyeri 8, Lamu 7, Siaya 7, Turkana 7, Laikipia 6,Tana River 6, Nandi 6, Garissa 6, Kitui 5, Baringo 4, Meru 4, Bomet 3, Kisii 3, Embu 3, Kwale 3, Vihiga 3, Kakamega 2, Kisumu 2, Makueni 1, Narok 1, Trans Nzoia 1, West Pokot 1, Elgeyo Marakwet 1, Homa Bay 1 and Isiolo 1.
With Nairobi leading in infections, the government is mulling locking down the county to counter the spread amidst political rallies that have yet again begun to take shape.
“Currently, Nairobi is the one that is concerning us because of positivity rates and I think it is important to know that people in Nairobi stand at most danger as far as current spread of the virus is concerned,” said CS Kagwe.
Politicians are on record flouting MoH COVID-19 protocols that require total conformity to social distance as they are allowing crowds to gather, selling their political manifesto ahead of general elections next year.
To this end, CS Kagwe implored the public to avoid politicians to stay safe from the virus that has had a negative impact on the regional and global economy.
Vaccination drive
A total of 1,692,793 vaccines have so far been administered across the country. Out of these, total first doses are 1,052,343 while second doses are 640,450.
“The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 60.9% with the majority being males at 55% while females are at 45 percent. The proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.35%,” said Health CS Mutahi Kagwe.
