Over 800 vulnerable households in Mandera county have received food donations from the Methodist church in Kenya.
During the distribution exercise, Libehia Assistant County Commissioner Mohamed Hussein hailed the government and other well-wishers who have come on board to ensure that no Kenyan dies of hunger.
“I want to thank the Methodist church in Kenya for remembering our people. This food will be distributed to 800 households to supplement government efforts in fighting drought,” said Hussein.
The Assistant County commissioner however requested the county government to ensure locals access to water as all the water points have dried up.
“All the water points here have dried up and the only option is for county government to supply water using water boozers,” he said.
The same church recently distributed food and other items to vulnerable populations in Hareri, where the area Assistant County commissioner Jesse Intae urged locals to safeguard their environment as the ongoing drought resulted from climate change
Meanwhile, the government through the National Drought Management Authority is aiding in repairing boreholes as well as supplying fuel to county water boozers.
At the same time, more than 30,000 residents of the county have been enrolled into cash transfer program where they receive Sh6,000 every month in efforts to mitigate the effects of the drought.
Additionally, the Mandera county commissioner Onesmus Kyatha has said last week alone the government spent Sh179 million to feed the vulnerable households in the region.
Mandera is facing serious food shortage due to failed rains over the last two years.
