The Meteorological Department of Kenya (KMD) has warned of potential floods as heavy rains continue to pound different parts of the country.
In a statement issued Monday evening, the Director of Meteorological Services, Stella Aura said the rainfall being experienced over several parts of the country is expected to continue this week.
The advisory further said, the deluge is likely to intensify to more than 30 millimetres in 24hrs over counties in the lake Victoria basin region, counties in the highlands west of the Rift Valley and along the coastline from Monday to Thursday.
“The heavy rainfall is projected to reduce in intensity on Friday 7th May, 2021,” read part of the statement.
“The heavy rains may lead to poor visibility. Small boats and crafts are advised to be on high alert because of potential strong winds and high waves. Updates will be provided promptly if there are any changes,” added Aura.
The Met Department has further warned that the heavy rains are likely to be accompanied by strong southerly winds and moderate significant wave heights of between 1.8 metres and 2.1 metres over the coastal areas.
“Areas of concern include the coastal region, covering Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, and parts of Tana River.” said the statement.
For the western parts of Kenya, residents of Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Nakuru, Narok, Migori, Nandi, Bungoma, Homa Bay, Kisumu, Siaya and Kakamega have been put on high alert.
KMD has advised residents of the affected areas to avoid driving through, or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees or near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.
