List of banks offering KCPE scholarships and how to apply

Secondary education is compulsory for every child in Kenya under the Basic Education Act even though many parents can barely afford to give their children this right.

Every year, thousands of students with promising futures await to join their respective secondary schools, but there’s always the looming worry of fees that many families face. Lack of finances can get in the way of getting a good education forcing even the deserving students to settle for average education.

To this end, some banks for years now, have stepped in to offer scholarships to top-performing students. The scholarships at this level provide benefits such as financial aid, mentorship, employment opportunities, etc. These scholarships, however, go a long way to benefit even needy students.

Below is a list of some of the Kenyan banks offering KCPE scholarships;

Equity Bank (Wings To Fly)

The Wings to Fly scholarship program is an initiative of the Equity Group and Mastercard Foundation (MCF), which was established to support secondary education for top-performing children from financially challenged backgrounds. Students enjoy the following benefits; tuition fees payment for four years, books, uniforms, transportation and pocket money up to form four.

Eligibility Criteria

1. You must be in the top 5th percentile in your sub-county in terms of marks
2. You must be from an economically disadvantaged background
3. You must be a Kenyan Citizen
4. You must have your result slip

How to apply

1. Go to the form page: Wings to Fly Application forms Online 
2. Register by entering a valid email and phone number
3. You will receive an activation code via email
4. Enter the confirmation code
5. Click activate account
6. Proceed with filling in your application details( Academic, Family information and Evidence of need)
7. Download recommendation and declaration form. Fill it out, scan and upload it.

Co-operative Bank 

The cooperative Bank Scholarship Foundation is an education scholarship scheme for bright but less endowed children who are facing difficulties in paying school fees for secondary education. The scholarship beneficiaries are selected every year from the 47 counties in Kenya and enjoy a full 4-year secondary education scholarship

Eligibility criteria

1. Students must have qualified with a minimum of 350 points in the K.C.P.E examinations
2. The student must be from a needy family that is unable to support secondary education
3. At least one of the parents of the student must be or have been a member of a cooperative society
4. Orphans will be eligible provided at least one of the deceased parents was a member of a cooperative society.

How to apply

Applications forms for the cooperative bank foundation scholarship can be accessed at any cooperative bank branch countrywide or any cooperative bank agent in Kenya.

Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB)

Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) awards over 200 secondary school education scholarships to needy students who sat for KCPE and passed well every year. Students enjoy the following benefits; payment of school fees for the 4 years of secondary school, support for personal effects and assistive devices for students with disability, internship and employment opportunities, quarterly one-on-one mentorship sessions with KCB branch staff and an annual holiday mentorship programme.

Eligibility criteria

1. The applicant must come from a needy home
2. The applicant must attain the prescribed county cut off marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination
3. The applicant must have a calling letter to a National or county/ex-county secondary school.

How to apply

1. Get the scholarship application form from any KCB Branch or download from the bank’s website.
2. Complete the application form and attach the following; KCPE result slip and admission letter from a national or extra county or county school.
3. Applicants should bring their completed application forms to the respective interview locations.
4. Details of the interview locations and dates can be obtained from any KCB branch. The interviews are conducted by KCB staff teams.
5. Home visits are conducted to verify the needy status of the shortlisted candidates.

Family Bank
Family Bank of Kenya offers scholarships to Kenyans wishing to continue with their High School education. The awarded scholarships cater for both tuition and upkeep for the beneficiaries. 

Eligibility criteria

1. The students must have achieved the required score (contact your nearest  Family Bank branch for more information).
2. The student must have an acceptance letter to a National or County School.
3. The student must demonstrate a need for financial assistance.

How to apply

1. Pick up an application form at any Family Bank Limited Branch or download the application form from the Family Bank Foundation site.
2. Complete the application form, attach all required documentation and return to your nearest Family Bank branch
3. Only successful candidates are contacted.

The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) 2021 results were released Monday, March 28, 2022, by the Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha.

A total of 831,015 candidates sat for the exam with Bruce Makenzie from Gilgil Hill Academy topping with 428 marks out of 500.

Out of these, a total of 11,857 candidates scored 400 marks.
