Kenya’s passport has been ranked 9th best in Africa and 71 in the world, having moved three steps up after it was positioned 74th globally in 2019.
This is an indication that holders of Kenyan passport are able to access 71 destinations across the world without a prior visa.
According to the latest report released by Henley Passport Index 2020, Kenya falls in the same ranking with China and Indonesia out of the 107 countries in the world.
The significant rise in power of Kenyan passport has been attributed to the increased global mobility gap based on the data presented by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Kenya adopted the electronic passport in 2017 phasing out the traditional ones which remain valid until March this year.
It is the most powerful passport in East African Communities trailed by Tanzania positioned at 73rd Uganda’s at 77th Rwanda at 83rd Burundi at 93rd.
Somalia’s Passport is the least powerful in East Africa, standing at position 104 globally and 32 on the continent.
The chip-embedded electronic passports which contain a holder’s biometric data was developed to quash looming forgery and impersonation of passport holders.
