Kenya has signed a new cooperation agreement with Cuba that will see 101 specialist Cuban doctors travel to Kenya.
The deal was signed by Kenya’s Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe together with his Cuban counterpart, Dr. Jose Angel Portal Miranda.
According to the Ministry of Health, the initiative is part of a medical exchange program between Kenya and Cuba.
CS Kagwe is on a three-week visit in Cuba to learn more about the country’s world-class primary health care delivery model and its highly successful programme to combat malaria.
“The agreement was signed during a meeting that makes part of the CS’s three-week visit to Cuba on a mission seeking to improve Kenya’s primary healthcare, said Kenya’s Ministry of Health.
The medical relationship between the two countries dates back to 2018 where Cuba sent 100 medical specialists to Kenya as part of a bilateral accord.
In June 2020, 20 Cuban doctors arrived in Nairobi to assist local health officials to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
Kenya is looking to improve and strengthen her primary healthcare system as a catalyst to achieving universal healthcare.
