Kenya Airways has reported a staggering Ksh.12 billion loss in the first half of 2025, a dramatic reversal from the Ksh.513 million net profit posted in the same period last year.
The airline’s revenues tumbled by 19 per cent, falling from Ksh.91 billion in 2024 to Ksh.74 billion this year, as both passenger numbers and available seat capacity dropped sharply.
Management attributes the decline to reduced operational capacity following the grounding of several aircraft and a global shortage of spare parts.
“In 2025, three of our nine Dreamliners were grounded between January and July due to delayed engine returns from the shop,” said KQ CEO Allan Kilavuka.

“We also faced challenges with some narrow-body aircraft, which reduced our overall capacity. Plans to acquire replacement aircraft were hampered by a shortage in the global market—out of four expected, we only received one.”
Kilavuka highlighted that most of the fleet is now due for expensive engine overhauls, each costing about USD 15 million and requiring up to four months to complete.
With limited cash flow, the airline has been unable to fast-track maintenance in global repair queues, unlike better-financed competitors.
Despite the financial turbulence, the airline has begun to restore some capacity. Of the three grounded Dreamliners, one has returned to service, with the remaining two expected back later this year.
Management is also banking on momentum from newly launched routes such as London Gatwick and Nairobi–Abidjan, raising hopes for a stronger performance in the second half of 2025.
