How NMS plans to force matatus from Nairobi CBD

Matatus in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) will be phased out of the city before the end of the year as the NMS devises a new strategy set to begin by June 30, 2022.

The Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) is onboarding reinforcement officers who will be tasked with manning different routes within the city and near the terminus to foresee eradication of PSVs from the busy CBD.

The officers will ensure the seamless flow of traffic within the city who will also collaborate with Public Service vehicles (PSV) operators and commuters to ensure smooth movement at alighting points.

“We will start the operation of the Green Park Terminus this month in two phases. These phases will be trial runs and all vehicles in the Railway Station will operate on a trial basis,” stated NMS Director of Transport and Public Works, Michael Ochieng.

NMS is expected to run a two-phased trial test ahead of the operationalisation of the Green Park bus terminus which is scheduled for opening at the end of June.

The two-phased trial will start on June 22, 2022, at 5 am. It is out of this trial that NMS devise measures to phase out matatus from CBD.

This will be the fourth test run at the terminus after NMS postponed the third on June 15 last year but was later done three days after.

Bus terminus are being developed by the NMS as part of decongesting Nairobi’s CBD and improving the commuter experience in the city.

The development process is in the transition phase of commissioning the terminus where all stakeholders are assessing their level of preparedness for commissioning the facilities.
