How Informal Sectors Will Use KRA’s Ectronic Tax Invoice System

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has unveiled the Electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) targeting businesses in the informal sector.

KRA is urging these businesses to adhere to the law by utilizing the eCitizen platforms for tax-related transactions.

eTIMS is mandatory for all individuals engaged in business activities in Kenya, whether they are registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) or not.

“To this end, we have availed eTIMS simplified solutions dubbed “eTIMS Lite” for non-VAT registered taxpayers,” the statement read in part.

KRA has been digitising and modernising its tax processes, as a means to simplify procedures and improve revenue collection efficiency.

The informal sectors in this sense include farmers, jua kali traders, artisans, and other small-scale entrepreneurs.

The taxman has already embarked on extensive publicity, awareness, and tax literacy campaigns.

By using eTIMS, you will benefit from:

– Simplified tax procedures and reduced compliance costs

– Improved accuracy and transparency of your tax records

– Enhanced verification and validation of your tax transactions

– Faster processing and settlement of your tax obligations

– Better access to tax information and services

How KRA Aims to Achieve This Goal

The agency is partnering with representative groups and associations within the informal.

They will provide direct support to taxpayers in adopting and integrating eTIMS into their business operations.

This, according to KRA, will bridge the gap between regulatory requirements and practical needs by facilitating a smoother transition to electronic tax invoicing.

KRA is doing this exercise to help businesses avoid struggling with the new system, at a time when a deadline to complying with filing returns looms.
