Govt imposes dusk-to-dawn curfew in parts of Rift Valley

Rising cases of insecurity in some parts of Rift Valley has prompted the government to impose a dusk-to-dawn curfew starting August 7, 2021.

In a gazette notice, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi said the 6 pm to 6 am curfew will apply in Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot Counties.

The order applies to Kolowa and Ngoron divisions of Tiaty West Sub-county, Baringo County, Tot and Chesongoch divisions of Marakwet East Subcounty, Elgeyo Marakwet County and Sekerot and Cheptulel locations of Pokot Central Subcounty, West Pokot County.

“The order is in view of the serious threat posed to security and public order by disturbances occurring in the Tot area of Marakwet East Sub-county in Elgeyo Marakwet County and the effects in the neighbouring Baringo and West Pokot counties,” said CS Matiangi.

The CS said the Order is made further to the Public Order (State Curfew) (Extension) Order No. 5 of 2021 currently in force and varied only to the extent of the specified areas.

“Under this Order, there shall be no public gatherings, processions or movement, either alone or as a group during the period of the curfew except as has been permitted in writing by the Inspector General of the National Police Service,” He said.
