Google Rolls Out AI Mode in Search Across Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa

Google has rolled out its new AI-powered search feature, AI Mode, in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa—its first launch of the tool on the African continent.

The feature is built on a customized version of Google’s Gemini 2.5 model, allowing users to make more complex, multi-part searches and receive detailed, AI-generated responses. Supporting text, voice, and image inputs, AI Mode is designed to deliver intuitive answers while clearly linking back to web sources.

“AI Mode reimagines the search experience,” said Alex Okosi, Google Africa Managing Director. “It empowers users to explore more content and get clearer, more relevant answers.”

The feature began rolling out on August 21, appearing as a dedicated tab on Google Search and within the mobile app. Using advanced reasoning, the system breaks down queries into subtopics before compiling results. If confidence levels are low, it defaults to traditional search listings.

The launch underscores Google’s growing commitment to AI adoption in Africa. Just last month, the company announced a $37 million investment in AI research, African language development, food systems innovation, and digital skills training.

By introducing AI Mode in Africa’s three largest internet markets, Google is testing whether AI-driven search can enhance user engagement and diversify the range of websites people visit.

The shift could reshape search behavior, moving from single-question lookups to richer, exploratory interactions. For publishers and startups, the inclusion of visible web links presents new discovery opportunities—though questions remain about how AI-driven aggregation may influence traffic flows.

With Africa’s young, mobile-first population, the region provides an ideal testing ground for Google’s next-generation search model.
