Ecobank Kenya Taps Former Family Bank Boss Mbithi as New Managing Director

The change, according to the lender, is intended to enhance service delivery, strengthen regional connectivity, improve performance, and unlock the next phase of growth.

Ecobank Kenya has announced Rebecca M. Mbithi as the new Managing Director, starting February 2026. This appointment is subject to approval by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

Ecobank Group, in a press statement, said it’s looking to strengthen leadership focus in Kenya and across the Central, Eastern and Southern Africa (CESA) region.

Rebecca Mbithi is credited with having led a successful turnaround at Family Bank, where she served as Chief Executive Officer, and brings over 20 years of executive leadership experience across different industries, including Kenya’s financial services sector.

She takes over from Mrs. Josephine N. Anan-Ankomah, who has stepped down from the Managing Director role to concentrate fully on her responsibilities as Ecobank’s Regional Executive for Central, Eastern and Southern Africa.

In this regional capacity, Josephine will continue to oversee 17 markets across the region, including Kenya.

The change, according to the lender, is intended to enhance service delivery, strengthen regional connectivity, improve performance, and unlock the next phase of growth.

According to the bank, Ecobank Kenya has spent the last three years implementing a focused strategy to strengthen its financial position and improve its ability to support customers.

“With this foundation now in place, the bank believes it is well positioned to expand its market presence in Kenya while taking advantage of the country’s strategic role within the East African Community and the wider region,” said Ecobank Kenya in a statement.

Ecobank has assured its clients that the transition has been carefully planned to ensure continuity.

Josephine will work closely with Rebecca during the handover period to guarantee a seamless experience for customers, with relationship teams, service structures, and daily banking operations remaining uninterrupted.

The bank has expressed confidence the transition will harness its ability to serve businesses and customers in Kenya and across the region.
