EAC Allows Kenyan Firms to Import 208,600 Tones of Sugar

The East African Community (EAC) has authorized ten Kenyan companies to import 208,600 tonnes of industrial sugar.
The greenlight is under a special tariff scheme, applying a reduced duty rate of 10% for 12 months.
This initiative supports the production of various industrial products such as soft drinks, juices, and sauces.
The approved firms include;
Mombasa Sugar Refinery,
Coca-Cola, Equator Bottlers,
Trufoods,
Jetlak Foods,
Devyani,
Bidco Africa,
Kenafric,
Njoro Canning, and an unnamed tenth company.
The importation is regulated under the EAC duty remission scheme, requiring manufacturers to be registered with the Sugar Directorate and, for non-COMESA sugar imports, to seek National Treasury approval per shipment.
This move aims to ensure a steady supply for manufacturing, boosting local production and the regional economy.
