COVID-19 is far from over but can be contained within months; says WHO boss

The World Health Organization (WHO) says the world still has got a long way to end the coronavirus pandemic.

According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the deadly disease can be brought under control with joint efforts on vaccination and epidemic prevention around the world.

Ghebreyesus said this January and February witness six consecutive weeks of declining cases, but the world has since seen seven consecutive weeks of increasing cases, and four weeks of increasing deaths.

He said that many deaths and the heavy burden on medical resources across many countries are avoidable with an equitable and efficient global vaccination, and stringent public health measures.

In some countries, despite continuing transmission, necessary pandemic control and prevention measures are still not in place, with the risk of virus transmission remaining high.

This even as Kenya’s tally of coronavirus cases as of April 12 stood at 146,156, with a positivity rate 16.3 percent.
