Court postpones corruption case against Gachagua

The high court has pushed the hearing and determination of the corruption case against Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua to September next year.

The firebrand MP is facing corruption allegations which the prosecutors have lined up 45 witnesses against him. The case was subject to a hearing on December 7, 2021.

But according to his lawyers, they were not served with all the witness statements against the MP.

The corruption allegations date back to 2015 when he is said to have defrauded Nyeri County Ksh.27.4 million.

He is also accused of fraudulently receiving Ksh.7.3 million, money suspected to be proceeds of crime through Rafiki Micro-Finance Bank knowingly.

On July 23, this year, Gachagua was also charged with acquiring more than Ksh7.3 billion suspected to be proceeds of crime.

The matter will be mentioned on February 24, 2022.

Gachagua’s corruption case has been pushed to a later date, two days after Deputy President William Ruto hinted at picking him as his running mate for the 2022 presidential race.

“I want to ask you for one favour, allow Gachagua to accompany me to other parts of the country so that we can be able to win this seat. Free him so that he can engage in national politics,” Ruto said while in Nyeri over the weekend.

“Allow your MP who delivers to join me in the next stage. Will you allow him to help me get the votes?”
