Former CEO of Kenya Medical Research Inistitute (KEMRI) Davy Koech has been found guilty of corruption.
The court has fined him Ksh.19.6 million failure to which he will serve a six-year jail term.
His contract was terminated following graft allegations and abuse of office
On July 14, 2009, the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested Koech and was arraigned in court following day.
He was arraigned at the anti-corruption and economic crimes court in January of 2010 and charged jointly with Dunstan Magu, William Kipyego, Denison Kiplagat, Joel Achiba, Battan Mecca and African Medical Services Trust (AMST).
Jointly with Kipyego, Koech was alleged to have unlawfully transferred Ksh.342 million belonging to KEMRI’s pension fund to an account held by AMST at Standard Chartered Bank’s Yaya Centre branch.
The seven were also accused of swindling KEMRI of Ksh.19.8 million on diverse dates between May 2003 and April 2007.
His termination was, however, followed by court battles when he filed petition seeking compensation for wrongful sacking.
In a 2012 judgement, a judge suspended the Ksh.125 million claim suit by Koech for alleged wrongful termination.
Dr Koech had sued his former employer in 2010 demanding Ksh.125 million terminal dues and other damages for breach of employment contract.
The services of the researcher were terminated on September 18, 2008.
