Coalition rot: Alfred Mutua ditches Azimio for DP Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza

A coalition rot has rocked Raila Odinga’s coalition with Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader Dr. Alfred Mutua now ditching Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance for Deputy President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza.

In a letter Monday, Mutua cried foul over Azimio’s strategy to zone some areas and its move to hold back the coalition agreement, not disclosed to MCC.

To this end, Mutua said that the party believes Deputy President William Ruto is the best to liberate Kenyans from the york of poverty.

The party has already signed a coalition agreement with Kenya Kwanza and has been given access to the coalition document.

“Unlike Azimio, here is a document we signed and we know its content. Azimio played us and sneaked a document on zoning. They have been doing nothing but managing us,” he said.

Mutua says he will traverse the country to campaign for DP Ruto in readiness for the August 9, 2022, general election.

He said they agreed with Ruto on zero zoning meaning that his party will be allowed to field candidates in all parts of the country.

“All our aspirants will be on the ballot. We also agreed on the role we’ll play when Kenya Kwanza wins and vice versa.”

Unlike Kenya Kwanza, Azimio has resolved to a zoning tactic where ODM strongholds will partly attract a majority of the party aspirant. The same applies to Azimio associate parties like Jubilee, Nark, KANU, Wiper Party, and others.

Another conundrum that has rocked Azimio is Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka whose foot soldiers have threatened a breakaway from the Odina-led Azimio, should he (Musyoka) not be fronted as the running mate.

Whereas Mutua charts a new coalition path with DP Ruto, his party boasts one Governor (Mutua himself), four MPs and about 40 Members of County Assemblies cut across the country.

He is among the pioneers of Azimio La Umoja which letter transitioned into Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance when they onboarded Musyoka, KANU party leader Gideon Moi and Narc Kenya’s Martha Karua.

Another key ally of ODM who has ditched the Azimio coalition for Kenya Kwanza is Kilifi County Assembly Jimmy Kahindi.

“We welcome the speaker of Kilifi County Assembly Jimmy Kahindi (ODM/Azimio) to Kenya Kwanza. This is the coalition for the economic empowerment of ordinary Kenyans,” said DP Ruto on his Twitter page.
