China reported a drop in its daily tally of new coronavirus cases on Monday, reversing four straight days of increases, as the capital, Beijing, developed other measures to contain new infections.
Reports indicated that new infection reported in China by Monday were from abroad, mostly for Chinese students who were studying abroad and were returning home.
China had 39 new confirmed cases on Sunday, down from 46 a day earlier. This was according to the Chinese National Health Commission said,
Beijing stepped up measures to contain imported infections, diverting all arriving international flights from Monday to other cities where passengers will undergo virus screening.
Beijing reported 10 new imported cases, down from 13 a day earlier. City authorities said cases came from Spain, Britain, France, the United States and Pakistan. Infections from abroad in Beijing hit an all-time daily high of 21 on March 18, Chinese National Health reported.
However, the death toll from the coronavirus pandemic continued its relentless rise in Europe with Italy announcing 651 dead on Sunday, bringing its total to 5,476.
It was an increase of 13.5 percent but down from Saturday’s figure when 793 people died.
Globally, more than 14,000 people have now died from COVID-19 and estimated 92,000 of the 304,500 people who contracted the disease globally have recovered.
Coronavirus cases in the US surge past 35,200 and recorded 471 deaths as infections exceed 336,000 globally.
