Nearly 10,000 people are reported to have lost their lives in road accidents in the country between 2019 and July this year.
Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna now claims the spiking carnage is linked to flouting of traffic rules including ignoring safety measures, reckless and drunken driving.
In a news conference at Mama Ngina Waterfront Park in Mombasa on Thursday, Oguna said most of the accidents have been caused by Boda Boda riders who are killing more people than motor vehicles on roads.
“The government has a plan, that of ensuring all Boda Boda are trained, it’s not for the first time we have addressed the issue. But we are saddened by the ever increasing road accidents claiming more lives,” said Oguna.

The Boda Boda National Association and other stakeholders have been urged to work with the government to bring sanity in the industry.
Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata also hinted out at Boda Boda operators blaming for escalating cases of road accidents.
“Most of the boda boda operators are not trained and openly disobey traffic rules including carrying excess passengers (mshakaki),” said Oguna who was accompanied by the Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata.
The Administrator assured residents that security agencies in the region are on the alert to counter any criminal activities, most of which have been associated with the riders.
Elungata expressed concern over resurgence of COVID-19 positive cases in some parts of the coastal region urging residents not to lower guards.
