Atwoli goes after NSSF Board over Uhuru’s order to appoint Omamo

The Central Organization for Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Dr. Francis Atwoli has come out guns blazing over the failure to gazette the appointment of Rose Omamo to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) Board as directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

This follows President Kenyatta’s Labour Day speech when he directed Labour Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui to immediately gazette Rose Omamo as COTU’s representative to NSSF Board effective May 4.

Atwoli has, however, accused the ministry of withholding Omamo’s appointment terming it defiance and contempt of the President’s directive.

“As patriotic Kenyans, we would like to remind the president that he should not be disrespected by his appointed and that failure to appoint COTU (K)’s nominee as earlier directed warrants for dismissal of the involved officials,” said Atwoli.

Atwoli has also accused the Ministry of spreading misinformation questioning the capacity of Omamo to join NSSF Board.

“Against this new narrative by the Ministry of Labour, Rose Omamo is articulate academic qualifications and equally runs one of the giant unions in Kenya, namely Amalgamated Union of Kenya Metal Workers which is an affiliate of the Industrial Global Union which represents over 50 million workers globally in 140 countries.”

Ministry of Labour raised concerns about the nominee that she would be holding two separate offices which stands against NSSF Act.

According to the NSSF Board’s Act, 2013, a person found holding any office faces disqualification from the board for appointment.
