Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi has introduced a specialized **Cholesterol (Lipid) Disorders Clinic**, the first of its kind in Kenya, to help manage and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Speaking at the launch, Rashid Khalani, CEO of Aga Khan University Hospital, emphasized the hospital’s commitment to innovation and patient-centered research.
“Heart disorders are on the rise due to lifestyle changes, including diet and physical inactivity. With this clinic, we aim to manage risk factors before they escalate into heart disease, offering patients a more convenient and cost-effective approach to heart health.”
Dr. Mzee Ngunga, Lead Interventional Cardiologist, highlighted the impact of cholesterol management in preventing heart attacks caused by blocked arteries.
“Proper cholesterol management not only reduces the risk of heart attacks but also improves life expectancy while minimizing the need for complex medications.”
He also noted that treatment for lipid disorders is typically lifelong, stressing the importance of regular check-ups—especially for individuals with a family history of early heart attacks (below 40 years for men and 50 years for women).
The Chief Guest, Dr. Bernard Samia, President of the Kenya Cardiac Society (KCS), commended the hospital for this milestone and emphasized the need for collaboration between the private and public sectors to advance cardiovascular health research and interventions.
“Lipid disorders data from this clinic and others countrywide will help shape treatment and prevention strategies for cardiovascular diseases. With hypertension rates in Kenya ranging between 16% and 21%, we must proactively address risk factors to ensure accurate diagnosis, treatment, and management of complications.”
