Absa Bank Kenya Advances Ksh.204 Billion in Sustainable Finance in Four Years

Absa Bank Kenya has stepped up its investment in sustainable finance, lending more than Ksh.204 billion between 2022 and 2025 to support businesses, expand financial inclusion and fund environmentally responsible projects.

According to the bank’s 2025 Sustainability and Climate Report, it disbursed Ksh.55.3 billion in sustainable financing during 2025, an increase from Ksh.47 billion the previous year.

A large share of the funding, Ksh.48.8 billion, went towards improving financial inclusion by supporting small and medium-sized businesses, women-owned enterprises, young entrepreneurs and communities that have traditionally had limited access to credit.

The remaining Ksh.6.5 billion was invested in climate-focused initiatives, including renewable energy, green buildings, energy-efficient projects and climate-smart agriculture.

Speaking at the unveiling event at Strathmore University, Yusuf Omari, the Absa Bank Kenya Interim Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, said the report reflects the Bank’s commitment to creating shared value for customers, communities and the broader economy.

“Our 2025 Sustainability and Climate Report highlights what we have achieved under our 2021–2025 sustainability strategy, which was anchored on 13 commitments aimed at delivering meaningful economic, social and environmental impact.

From supporting businesses to grow and enabling access to affordable housing, to financing climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy and broader financial inclusion, we have intentionally deployed capital where it can make the greatest difference. We remain committed to partnering with our customers and stakeholders to build a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable future for Kenya.”

The report also highlights the bank’s growing commitment to sustainable lending. By the end of 2025, eligible sustainable finance accounted for 30% of Absa Bank Kenya’s total loan disbursements, three times higher than its target of 10% for the year.
