AA Kenya embarks on pedestrian visibility campaign

Over 20,000 school children across all the 47 counties are set to receive reflective sashes through a pedestrian visibility campaign launched by Automobile Association (AA) of Kenya.

Through the campaign, the association is pushing to reduce the number of road accidents victims among children and teenagers that make up 21 percent of road carnage victims in the country.

During a distribution exercise at Lakewood Premier School in Utawala, AA Kenya CEO Francis Theuri said the school-going children are at risk of being victims of road accidents especially at dawn and dusk, or when drivers’ visibility is impaired because of smoke, dust or fog.

“These reflective sashes will ensure that we reduce the number of children fatalities on the roads by making them more visible to motorists. To further ensure continuity and spread of the pedestrian visibility message, we shall also be working with road safety champions in each school to ensure this is a sustainable education exercise across the country,” said Francis Theuri.

The campaign dubbed “I See You” which will run till the end of this year will also see teachers and learners trained on road safety. The initiative is part of a global campaign by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) of which AA Kenya is a member.

FIA region together with 15 Automobile and mobility clubs are helping raise awareness among the African population through the I See You campaign. According to the WHO (2021), globally approximately 1.3 million people lose their lives in road traffic crashes each year and 90 percent of these deaths occur in low and middle-income countries.
