Safaricom remembered Michael Joseph together with the late Bob Collymore for their tremendous achievement.
Safaricom’s Board said both executives oversaw the success of Safaricom and M-Pesa Foundations which have supported a number of projects in Kenya.
“He (Joseph), together with the late Bob Collymore, launched the highly successful M-PESA Foundation Academy,” said the Board.
Safaricom Foundation has impacted more than 5 million lives in Kenya cut across 47 counties, 3,000 projects that have been launched at a combined rate of Ksh.10.86 billion.
Established in 2010, M-PESA Foundation’s main approach has been to empower communities through four key areas: Health, Education, Environmental Conservation and Integrated Livelihoods.
It has impacted over 2000 students in all counties, and one million Kenyans have been impacted by interventions in health facilities; mothers and children too have greatly benefited.
The Foundation has planted over 250,000 trees, forests secured, and animals protected and over 57,000 Kenyans have benefitted from investments in clean water, solar power.
Michael was the founding CEO of Safaricom Limited, steering the Company from a subscriber base of less than 18,000 in 2000 to over 17 million subscribers when he handed over to Collymore in 2009.
The telco has become the most successful company in East Africa.
Joseph resigned from Safaricom on August 8, 2023, to focus on other ventures among them overseeing the operations of Kenya Airways as the Chairman.
