The National Treasury has set April 7, 2022, as the date for the 2022 budget statement presentation.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani will read the Ksh.3.31 trillion budget two months early than usual, allowing parliamentarians to approve expenditure before their terms expire
The presentation of the budget statement is expected to be the last for Yatani during the current administration.
“This is to notify the general public that the Budget Statement for the FY 2022/23 will be delivered by the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Planning in the National Assembly on Thursday, 7th April 2022 from 3:00p.m,”CS Yatani said in a notice on Monday.
It will be President Uhuru Kenyatta’s final budget plan before he leaves office after the August 9 elections.
The budget for the year beginning July has been fast-tracked to enable timely approval of the estimates of revenue and expenditure to be included in the Appropriation Bill.
The Executive, Parliament, and the Judiciary would be able to withdraw funds from public coffers for the day-to-day administration of their programs after the Appropriation Bill is passed by MPs and signed into law by President Kenyatta
Failure to pass the key legislation, under Article 221 of the Constitution, will, therefore, lead to a cash crisis for key government activities in the year starting July, including funds for general elections on August 9.
