List of shame: EPRA lists facilities involved in LPG malpractices

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has published nine facilities found undertaking illegal liquefied petroleum gas activities in the country.

Eight of this facility are from Nairobi County while one is from Baringo.

In a statement, the regulator said the listing follows random surveillance and enforcement undertaken between April and June this year with a view to enhancing consumer safety.

The Petroleum ACT 2019 and the Petroleum LPG Regulations 2019 require persons to undertake the business of liquefied petrol gas in “accordance with the terms and conditions of their valid licenses

The nine non-compliant facilities according to EPRA, are City gas, Green energy, More gas, Eco-energy.

There is an ongoing prosecution following the malpractice.

In April this year, EPRA shut down 12 fuel stations in the country over what the regulator also termed as non-compliance.

The authority maintains a hotline number 0709 336 000 which is operational during official working hours to enhance enforcement and complance activities.

“We encourage members of the public to report suspected cases of illegal LPG trade throughout he hotline number,” said EPRA.

The 12 petrol and diesel stations were selling adulterated and export bound motor fuels in the local market between January 1, to March 30, 2021.

Between January and March this year, the regulator conducted 5,536 tests at 1,182 petroleum sites across the country, out of which, only 98.99 percent stations were found to be compliant

The law mandates EPRA to develop and enforce guidelines that ensure compliance.

The authority conducts surveillance and enforcement on LPG facilities with a view to enhancing environmental and consumer safety.
