NMS halts parking fees in city estates

The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has halted its plan to charge parking fees in city estates until proper consultations have been conducted.

NMS Director General Mohammed Badi says the move follows massive protest and complaints from the members of the public.

The unit had in June this year listed more city estates as eligible for parking fees in a bid to widen its revenue streams.

The change of mind came after a week of uproar from members of the public who termed the decision unjustifiable and insensitive owing to the current economic fallout caused by COVID-19.

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja is among the leaders who openly and vehemently opposed the move describing it as punitive.

According to Sakaja, the government is heavily taxing Nairobi residents and Kenyans in general and it was a bad idea to worsen the burden.
