The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has served the China Roads and Bridges Corporation (CRBC) with an Environmental Restoration Order.
According to the Authority, a compulsory inspection done between August 30 and September 3 this year along the Expressway construction site, composites and its respective sites within Nairobi, Kiambu and Machakos Counties revealed that the contractor did not have the required Environmental Impact Assessment licence.
As a result, CRBC has been directed to adhere to the requirements of their licenses that will see construction done only during the day from 8 AM to 6 PM on weekdays, Saturday activities will end and 1 PM while Sundays will have zero construction activities.
Additionally, the contractor has been directed to have utility relocation plans within 21 days to cover water, sewerage, electricity and ICT relocation plans for the affected areas.
NEMA has also called for the immediate closure of the housing units at the Ngelani Quarry until proper waste management is installed.
The directives are likely to have an impact on the completion time of the Multi-million Expressway project that was expected to end in June next year.
